Piarist Church

Piarist Church

Piarist Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, built between 1714-1727 by Kasper Bażanka, is an example of a joyful baroque, which rather arouses admiration than overwhelms with an exaggerated amount of decorations. Small facade – the work of Francesco Placidi, visible from the Market Square itself, jest estetyczną nagrodą dla tych, who will walk along ul. st. Jana. In the sumptuous interior of the temple, the most impressive is the illusionist polychrome of the vault in the nave by Franciszek Eckstein from Moravia, optically extending the nave and body. The lighting and colors of the paintings in the presbytery give the illusion of smoke rising under the ceiling. On the right side of the main altar there is an urn with the heart of the 18th-century reformer of Polish education – Piarist Stanisław Konarski, the bust of which is visible above the entrance to the church. The door under the stairs at the sidewalk level leads to the so-called "lower church", where the tomb of Christ is exhibited during Easter, and from 1980 r. exhibitions of religious sculptures are organized.

It adjoins the Piarist church on the eastern side (it's already ul. Piarska) City Arsenal from the 15th century., where the weapons used to defend the city were originally stored. W XIX w. part of the Czartoryski collection was placed here.
