Entrance to the Wawel Castle

There are two roads to Wawel: traditional, the oldest, running steeply along the northern wing of the royal castle from ul. Kanonicza, and much newer, climbing gently along the southern slope from the intersection of Stradom streets, Bernardyńska and St.. Gertrudy. The road from ul. Kanonicza, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, was the only gateway to the "Wawel town".

Already at the beginning, you can hear lively melodies played by elderly musicians from Krakow bands, the sense of sight is attacked by the wonderful beauty and typical Wawel souvenirs spread over numerous stalls: good morning, Russian babes and caps of Soviet officers. On the wall, along which the visiting people are pushing their way, "Wawel bricks" with the names of sponsors are visible, who in the interwar period responded to the appeal of the reconstruction manager, Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz and bought it out 6330 bricks, of which were embedded 1800. Towers rise above the walls: Sobieski, Zygmuntowska and Clockowa.

The first Wawel gate, which visitors cross, it is called Herbowa from the coats of arms of the Polish lands on it, Ruthenian and Lithuanian. On the left side, on the stronghold of Władysław IV, there is a monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko, a reconstruction of Leonard Marconi's work destroyed during the war. Further on, the Gate of the Vasa with 1595 r., opening onto a small square between the Wawel Cathedral and the brown building of the Cathedral Museum.
